Lying strategically in the center of the Indo-Pacific
rim which covers the Indian and Pacific Ocean, the Indonesian
archipelago is home to a plethora of marine life. It has a same
species of fish as those found in Hawaii and the Red Sea. In
fact, the tropical marine life in Indonesian water is more diverse
than elsewhere in the world, and new species are being discovered.
Therefore Bali is not only a paradise on land but also a paradise
underwater.
A
pleasant warm climate averaging 27 degree Celsius all year around
and good visibility in Bali’s waters await every diver
to its impressive dive sites. The best time of the year for
diving is the dry season from April to October while the wet
season from November to March can be quiet torrential. Even
the water close to the shore, there are excellent diving and
snorkeling areas teeming with a wide range of tropical fish.
Dolphin, rays, sperm and blue whales, sea snakes and moray eels
are frequently sighted and the reefs are in primitive condition.
The best places for diving and snorkeling in
Bali are in the off-shore waters of Padang
Bai and Candi Dasa in the east, at Tulamben
and Amed, and in the north at Lovina and its beautiful beach.
Further on is Pemuteran and in the western tip of Bali is Labuan
Lalang, the kick-off point to Menjangan
Island, an uninhabited island with excellent dive sites.
Nearly 7000 hectares of coral reef and coastal waters are protected
as a part of the Bali
Barat National Park, including Menjangan Island.
In southern Bali, the reef in Sanur, the island
of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa
Penida, and in Gili Air, Gili Trawangan, and Gili Meno in
Lombok are all popular diving destinations.
